As we turned the page on June 2025, closing out the first half of the year, it was the perfect time to celebrate this remarkable month — for our horses, our connections, and the entire team. June delivered a string of inspiring victories — from debut wins to seasoned campaigners showing their class. Here’s a look back at all the winning moments, outstanding performances, and unforgettable rides.
5th June 2025 – A Day of Double Delight
Top Division
Our month kicked off in spectacular fashion with TOP DIVISION making an eye-catching debut at the highest level. As the very first progeny of our Group 1-winning mare, MIGHTY HIGH, this exciting youngster wasted no time stamping his authority. Ridden to perfection by the ever-reliable Gavin Lerena, TOP DIVISION signaled himself as another future star for our stable.
Hearty congratulations to the breeders, Messrs L M F Wernars & A J van Huyssteen, and our proud co-owners Messrs D Chinsammy & J F Wernars. A thrilling win for the whole team!
Obsidian
Later the same day, OBSIDIAN made his presence felt in emphatic style, romping home by an impressive 4.30 lengths. This was his 2nd career win from only 7 starts, demonstrating both talent and determination with four placings already on his record. S’manga Khumalo delivered another confident ride, guiding this promising gelding by Erupt (IRE) out of Saint Mary (IRE) to a commanding victory.

23rd June 2025 – A Flying Start for Alpine Jet

ALPINE JET lived up to all expectations as the race favourite, delivering a powerful and polished victory on debut. With Gavin Lerena in the saddle once again, this talented prospect announced her arrival in style — a glimpse of the big future we all hope awaits.
Big plaudits to the winning ownership team: The Wernars & Sewgoolam families, and to breeder Lammerskraal Stud. Purchased for R1,200,000 at the 2024 National Yearling Sale, Alpine Jet has repaid the faith with a perfect start!
29th June 2025 – Super Saturday Success
Chieftain
Never far from the headlines, CHIEFTAIN added another victory to his ever-growing record, making it 3 wins and 5 places from just 10 runs. Under the familiar guidance of Gavin Lerena, this consistent campaigner demonstrated professionalism and heart — traits that have become his hallmark.
Congratulations again to Messrs J F & L M F Wernars & R M Sewgoolam, and to the breeding excellence of Drakenstein Stud.

The month closed with ENSUING signing off at Turffontein in commanding fashion, overcoming a hefty 63kg to record his 5th career win from 25 starts. This was a testament to his class and the masterful skills of Gavin Lerena, who completed a remarkable five wins on the day!
