Weekly Double as CYMRIC and KUDZU Shine at Turffontein

Over the past weekend, we saw the running of the second leg of the WILGERBOSDRIFT-sponsored South African Triple Tiara & as well as the Horse Chestnut Stakes. Some big names came to the fore, and newly made champions were born. WILGERBOSDRIFT Stud Farm, also the breeders of our two recent winners, KUDZU and CYMRIC. Our heartfelt congratulations go out to our devoted owners, breeders, jockeys and, of course, the dedicated stable team who make every success possible.

CYMRIC Storms Home – Saturday, 1 March 2025 (Classic Day)

It was a thrilling performance on Saturday 1 March, in Race 4 – the TAB Middle Stakes over 1160m at Turffontein’s Standside Track. CYMRIC (Vercingetorix – Savannah Cat) crossed the finish line in dazzling style, guided impeccably by jockey Aldo Domeyer. Our hearty congratulations to the victorious owners, J F & L M F Wernars and R M Sewgoolam, as well as the esteemed breeders Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein.

Reflecting on CYMRIC’s big show victory:

We’re absolutely delighted with that winning run. Aldo summed everything up beautifully—he got CYMRIC out quickly, setting perfect fractions and showing great determination to fend off strong late challenges. This win certainly carries plenty of merit. Though it’s been a moment since his last success back in Durban Scottsville’s Grade 3 Godolphin Barb Stakes, his recent form has been stronger than it may appear at first glance. He’s consistently competed against quality horses, and this time he showed us what he’s really capable of. It’s particularly rewarding because the fillies held an advantage from the weights, yet CYMRIC overcame this and delivered an exceptional performance.

We extend a heartfelt thanks to Aldo Domeyer, whose skilful riding was instrumental in securing this latest win. Domeyer took the initiative at short notice, travelling up specifically at the invitation of Andrew Fortune, similar to the previous success aboard CHASING HAPPINESS on Summer Cup Day. The team’s sincerest appreciation and congratulations again goes to the Wernars and Sewgoolam families for their unwavering support.

Finally, special recognition must go to the essential work behind the scenes. Our dedicated home team: Andrew, Hennie, and Louis—your tireless efforts and commitment are fundamental to these fantastic results.

KUDZU Flourishes Beautifully – Thursday, 27 February 2025

Just days earlier, On Thursday 27 February, the winner’s enclosure again welcomed us back. Race 8, the MR84 Handicap over 1600m on the Turffontein Inside Track, saw KUDZU (Flower Alley (USA) – Headstrong) deliver a breathtaking performance under jockey Muzi Yeni, capturing a much-deserved and eagerly anticipated win.

Congratulations to owners J F & L M F Wernars and Mrs T J Wernars on KUDZU’s commendable runs, as well as to breeders Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, who have once again supplied us with a genuine talent.

Sharing insight on KUDZU:

He was certainly due this victory! KUDZU has consistently competed against strong opposition, and being by FLOWER ALLEY, we were confident he’d mature significantly with age and racing. Initially leggy and needing plenty of time to strengthen, he’s now blossomed into a beautifully sound horse, both physically and mentally. Although he’s still gaining confidence as he matures, we believe he’s only just beginning to show the real depths of his ability. We fully expect him to deliver even more rewarding performances as we move through the winter months.

With CYMRIC and KUDZU’s outstanding performances this last week, it’s been a magnificent way to celebrate hard work, team spirit and dedication. Here’s to continued success as we look forward eagerly to more great results in the months ahead!

Warmest thanks to everyone involved—from stable-hands to breeders, riders, and owners—each and every one contributes immeasurably to the success we celebrate today.

Let’s keep the momentum going!

Thanks.
